Carol Rudge

I lead the NFP group at HW Fisher and am Head of Coaching. I have worked in the sector for 30 years having followed my passion to become a specialist in this area not long after qualifying as a chartered accountant.

My experience extends across charities, universities, independent schools, trade unions and membership bodies and I have worked with a very diverse range of clients in terms of both size and activities. This has enabled me to develop significant expertise across all aspects of accounting, assurance and governance as well as strategic issues and risk.

I am a member of the Charity Commission’s SORP committee which gives me first-hand knowledge of the technical direction of travel for the sector. I have also been a member of an audit committee of a large international charity.

I am an accredited coach and really enjoy my coaching activities as I strongly believe that coaching can make a real difference to individuals. I am also a passionate believer in EDI.

I joined HW Fisher as a partner in 2021 having previously been a partner and global head of Not for Profit at Grant Thornton for many years.

Mark Powell

I am a Partner in the Bath office, I joined the team after eight years at Moore South West. I provide audit, accountancy and business advisory services to a variety of clients across a wide range of sectors, although I specialise in financial reporting, acting for clients reporting under both IFRS or UK GAAP including AIM listed clients, subsidiaries of foreign companies, and owner managed businesses. In addition to this, I work with a portfolio of not-for-profit entities including both charities and education clients, namely academy schools and further education colleges. I have a passion for helping people that want to grow their businesses achieve their personal and professional goals.
My background
Before joining Moore South West, I spent two years at a leading audit, tax, and consulting adviser, also Bath-based, prior to which I worked as an audit manager for PwC for ten years, including a three-year secondment to their Perth office. A world away from audit, in a former life I was a professional cricketer for Northamptonshire for six years where my claim to fame was being 12th man for England in a test match at Lord's; it was the debut of England’s leading wicket-taker, Jimmy Anderson. Outside of work, when I'm not taking my two children to their various sporting fixtures and clubs, I like to run, watch sport and try to stay on top of the gardening. FAQs for Sumer Audit

We provide high-quality, risk-focused audits tailored specifically for SMEs across the UK and Ireland. Our approach combines sector insight, local knowledge and advanced technology to deliver clear, valuable outcomes.

A company is legally required to have a statutory audit in the UK when it exceeds certain size thresholds for turnover, assets or employees. Even if exempt, many SMEs choose a voluntary audit for added credibility.

SMEs benefit from audits even when they’re not legally required. An audit can enhance integrity, and many businesses choose to have one to strengthen trust, secure funding or prepare for growth.

A professional audit improves transparency by providing independent assurance that your financial statements are accurate and reliable. It also highlights areas for improvement in reporting and controls, helping you make clearer, more informed decisions.

An independent audit builds trust with investors, lenders and stakeholders by providing objective assurance over your financial information. This credibility can be crucial when raising finance or scaling your business.

Audits add value by assessing your internal controls, processes and risk areas, not just your financial figures. This helps identify inefficiencies, reduce risk and improve how your business operates.

Technology allows us to analyse larger volumes of data, identify risks faster and streamline the audit process. This means a smoother experience for you and deeper insights into your business.

We tailor every audit by taking the time to understand your business, goals and sector. This ensures our work is relevant, practical and aligned with what matters most to you.

Your audit will be led by an experienced partner who takes full responsibility for quality and delivery. This ensures you benefit from senior insight, consistent communication and a trusted point of contact throughout.

Yes, an audit can help reduce fraud risk by identifying control weaknesses and highlighting potential risk areas. While it doesn’t detect every fraud, it can strengthen your overall control environment.

We support businesses in all sectors by combining broad audit expertise with an understanding of specific industry challenges. This allows us to provide practical, relevant insights that reflect how your business really operates.

We combine local expertise with national strength, partner-led service and the latest technology to deliver a more insightful audit. Our focus is on building relationships and delivering real value, not just compliance.

For the CFO of a growing SME, crossing the £15m revenue threshold is a landmark achievement. It signifies that the business has moved beyond the "startup" phase. Why an audit is good for your SME business: 5 key benefits

Audits often get a bad reputation. They’re sometimes seen as stressful, overly technical, or a sign that something has gone wrong. In reality, a well-run audit is far more than just a box ticking exercise. It provides assurance, insight, and a clear independent view of a company’s financial health and ability to continue as a
